Behind the many masks the psychopath feigns to fool his/her prey lurks a very primal animal whether violent or not. They have no emotions, not reference for our emotions. They are without conscience. Whether violent or not they are predatory seeing people as mere objects or prey that they get a sense of aliveness out of hurting in many differing ways.
The telling and revealing thing about psychopaths when we learn how to spot them is that they are unconsciously produced. What is unconsciously produced in psychopaths that they do not have awareness of does give the rest of us a bit of an advantage in understanding them and spotting them so that we can navigate away from them. These unconscious actions and the accompanying disfluency of language – odd speech – reveal the inner psychological dynamics of the psychopath’s mind even though he/she is totally unaware of it
Psychopaths use close to twice as many words related to basic physiological needs and self-preservation which makes known their self-focus in a more “animal” base type way because it is devoid of conscience and emotions.
The more dysfluencies — the “uhs” and “ums” and other words: “like” “but” “and” “so” to name a few, that interrupt speech — are revealing about one’s psychopathic nature. The psychopaths’ use of language contained more words known as subordinating conjunctions. These words, including “because” and “so that,” are now understood to be associated with cause-and-effect statements.
Nearly universal in speech, dysfluencies indicate that the speaker needs some time to think about what they are saying. The psychopath needs the control of dysfluencies not only for control and to grapple to put on that feigned mask of “sanity” but also to find their way around what could appear “normal” fool someone else from a totally intellectual perspective without any reference for emotions, empathy, conscience, or feelings of any kind.
